Welcome to “Bible Ponderings #2” which finds me in Leviticus and soon to be Numbers in the chronological bible reading plan. Every few weeks or so I hope to toss out there what I’m currently reading and invite you to ponder with me! 

Let’s be honest, it can be hard going and possibly “boring” wading through the details of the books of Leviticus and Numbers! 

So. Many. Details.

But details matter to God or He would not have had Moses record them.

Through the Old Covenant God was setting aside a nation holy unto Himself, as well as giving us types and shadows of what was to come under the glorious New Covenant.

“And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the people’s, that You should be Mine.” Leviticus 20:26 NKJV

“Therefore you shall keep my commandments; and perform them: I am the Lord. You shall not profane my holy name, but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord.” Leviticus 22:31 NKJV

The intricate details of the Law can raise many a “huh?” furrow of the brows as I am reading, but when God said He was setting the Israelites apart as a holy nation, He really was. In every…single…detail.

Exodus records the specifications for the making of the tabernacle and now in Leviticus we read of everything required for its function. The details came alive for me when we had the wonderful privilege of visiting Israel four years ago. We visited a replica of the wilderness tabernacle in a place called Park Timna in the Negev desert. Can you imagine having the Tabernacle in your midst? To see the cloud of God’s glory descend upon it? Can you see the million or so people camped around it? What were the sights? The smells? The sounds?

The more I think about it, the more I realise the details matter. It shouldn’t surprise us that God who made everything in such intricate detail…the earth and everything in it, the heavens, our amazing bodies…would also give us such intricate details in His Word. Even what we might consider the “boring” parts!
