Momentary Moments

I still remember this sunset. Captured on my phone it was one of those moments where I was awed by the beauty and my heart swelled full of joy that I got to experience this.

Like me, do you long to hit pause on these kinds of momentary moments? To bask in the wonder and beauty of God’s gift before it flees away?

These moments seem rare. And we don’t always have a camera with us! But are they really that rare?

Perhaps God delights to give us these kinds of momentary moments each and every day if only we open our eyes, ears, and heart to look?

The bigger and more spectacular moments tend to be captured…the wedding, the birth, the graduation. But momentary moments are not always big or spectacular and are of the fleeting variety. Those seconds are special and have the potential to make our hearts smile if we’re looking.

The other day my six-week-old grandbubba smiled at me for the first time. A joyous yet bittersweet moment because trying to hold the beauty of a momentary moment is like trying to hold golden light in our fingers. Pfft! Just like that, the seconds pass, and it is gone.

She’ll smile at me again, and again I’ll try to appreciate all the fullness of that moment.

So often we miss momentary moments because we are thinking about the past or stressing about the next five minutes! Or the urgent is pre-occupying our thoughts. I cringe when I think about how many small moments I have missed in my lifetime due to that mindset.

God by His grace declares that His mercies are new every morning. So when those momentary moments come our way let’s pray that we have the eyes to see the blessing, even in the briefest of joys!

  1. Thank you for this much needed reminder. Too often I am worrying about something or running off to the next thing. I miss too many of the gifts that the Lord sends my way. I am thankful for this post and the nudge to slow down and soak in the beauty around us! 🦋

  2. Thank you for the helpful reminder, Jo. God’s mercies are indeed new every morning, but we must realize this. I know I’ve been guilty of getting caught up in whatever stressful thing I’m dealing with at the moment. I need to “stop and smell the rose” as we say here in the USA. Blessings!

  3. Thank you for this reminder, Jo. As for me it’s easier to catch the beauty of each sunrise when my thoughts are already with Him in early devotions. Otherwise zippp…it’s past and I have to remember in hindsight. Thankfully He gives more opportunities throughout the day!

  4. I think you’re right, Jo. There are momentary moments offered every day IF we’re prepared. As you and G.W. mention, when our hearts are aligned with our Lord we will be more receptive to those twinkling gifts. This is a great devotional. Jehovah bless you.

  5. Jo, your post caught the essence and joy of momentary moments. As you said, so many things seek to put blinders on our eyes so we miss them. When my youngest reached the chapter book stage of reading, one of her favorite series was called “Cam Jansen.” The main character had a photographic memory and loved to solve mysteries. She would say “click” to help her capture a photo in time. More than once when I’ve happened upon a beautiful moment with no phone camera in sight, I’ve paused and mentally said “click” asking the Lord to seal in my memory that gift of beauty He’s given.
